I am new to this blog thing so please bear with me.  There have been no posts since I created this blog due to me having a dinosaur of a computer so yesterday we picked up a new laptop.  It is “aqua” blue and think it is the coolest thing.  I can just imagine myself sitting in an oversized chair in Starbucks hammering away at the keyboard while sipping my very berry hibiscus tea looking as cool as all get out.  You can picture it, right?  Me, resembling a hipster millennial in a coffee bar?  Maybe I’ll get there but for now I am just happy to be actually blogging at home in my pajamas and not procrastinating.

So as I stated in my first post my sister Kelly & I decided to start a food crawl to broaden our culinary horizons.  Last Tuesday(hence the procrastinating comment in the previous paragraph)we decided to check out Terra located on the corner of State Street & Meeting Street in West Columbia.  The draw to the restaurant was the fact that Kelly could get order escargot if she so dared and there was pizza for my girlfriend Donna.

We didn’t push the envelope this time, no snails tonight, but did order a variety of foods.  Appetizers consisted of fried green tomatoes and a “butchers plate” with an assortment of House-made Charcuterie, House-made Pickles, Grilled Baguette and Mustard.  Then we moved onto the entrees.  Donna got her Wood Fired Pizza with Grape Tomato Basil Pesto and I ordered a Carbonara, both were very tasty.  Kelly ordered the Carolina Heritage Farms Pork Chop with Andouille Dirty Rice, Broccolini, Creole Crawfish Veloute.  Now enter the terror portion of my story…

As we are eating all of a sudden Kelly grabs my arm so I turn and see her clutching her throat.  She’s choking!  OMG!  She’s friggin’ choking!  At that moment I had such a rush of adrenaline from my head to my toes.  I thought to myself, “If I don’t do this right my sister will die”.  I jumped from my chair, got behind my sister and started doing the Heimlich maneuver.  Just a side note for anyone in this situation in the future, if someone is coughing that means the airway isn’t totally obstructed and they can still breathe.  By the time I started doing the Heimlich on her the piece of pork chop that was lodged in her throat had already come up and out.  First she almost dies and then here I come beating the crap out of her after the fact.  What a first crawl.  Needless to say we didn’t stay for dessert.  I then treated us all to coffee and chocolate dipped cones from Mickey D’s.

All kidding aside, that was the scariest moment of my life seeing my sister choking.  I have never done the Heimlich maneuver before and I’m not even sure if I did it right but I was proud of myself that I reacted the way I did.  I can’t say the same for the patrons sitting around us in the restaurant.  None of them did anything to help.  None of them asked if we were okay.  I am just grateful that she is okay.  If anyone knows somewhere I can take a class on cpr/first aid I’d appreciate some recommendations.  I hope my future blogs are a lot less eventful than this one.  The food was good but not memorable so I don’t think we’ll be going back anytime soon.  Be on the look out for my next foodie adventure folks!  Hope you enjoyed this one  🙂
